Series on Women Changing the World Betty Makoni,

May 17th, 2012

Gender-based violence represents a global problem, especially for the girl child. Girls in many parts of the world are denied safety and their fundamental rights are often ignored. “Girls are discriminated against all over the world for two reasons: because they are children and because they are girls. This means that girls may be the most vulnerable group in society,” states Betty Makoni, activist and advocate for girls in Zimbabwe.

Betty understands the gravity of the situation all too well. For nearly two decades, she has spoken out about violence against children and stood up for girls across Zimbabwe. Despite death threats from government officials, Betty continues to work to protect children from all forms of abuse. For her dedication and courage, we honor her work and accomplishments in our series on Women Changing the World.

Betty was six years old when a local shopkeeper raped her. Silenced by her mother, she didn’t dare to speak out about the night she was locked in a dark room and held at knifepoint. Unfortunately, the story of Betty’s childhood is all too familiar. A girl falls victim to the exploitation of adults in her home, school, or community, and is then further victimized through forced silence.

While Betty’s past shares the same tragic beginning as girls worldwide, her story takes a unique turn. After Betty’s father murdered her mother, Betty recognized the dangerous consequences of a woman’s secrecy. “I told myself that no girl or woman will suffer the same,” states Betty replica watches, reflecting on her childhood. “What happened to me replica watches, my mother and grandmother should never happen to any girl again.” Despite being orphaned at the age of nine, Betty fought to stay in school because she knew this was the only way she could ever speak out about her past.

After receiving her university diploma, Betty became a teacher. Working in the classroom, Betty soon noticed the alarming rate at which girls drop out of school and upon further exploration, she learned more about the violence the girls experienced. Recognizing the girls’ need to speak about their experiences with abuse, Betty created an empowerment club so that girls could talk in a secure environment. With her help, schools across Zimbabwe initiated similar programs and in March 1999, Betty launched the Girl Child Network (GCN), uniting all clubs under one association.

Through the Girl Child Network, Betty oversees 35,000 members, manages over 500 girls’ empowerment clubs, and has established three safe villages for girls particularly vulnerable to violence. Since the creation of the first village in 2001, Betty has saved girls from abuse, child labor, forced marriage, trafficking and assault. The safe villages provide clothing, food, medical care, shelter and schooling replica watches, but above all else, they provide the girls with safety and refuge. With the guidance of village mothers and the support of their new sisters, the girls make remarkable progress in overcoming their physical and emotional scars.

In 2003, the Women’s World Summit Foundation awarded Betty with the Prize for Women’s Creativity in Rural Life, recognizing her projects and campaigns that have brought justice and peace to countless girls and families across Zimbabwe. Since 2003, Betty has received over eighteen global and national awards including the CNN 2009 Hero award for protection of the powerless and as of June 9, 2012, the prestigious Afrikan Goddess Award. Her safe villages are the subject of Michealene Cristini’s 2009 documentary, Tapestries of Hope, and her work is recognized in the newly released book On the Up by Rob and Nikki Wilson.

To date, Betty is the director of Girl Child Network (GCN) Zimbabwe and Chief Executive Officer of Girl Child Network Worldwide. She helped establish the Girl Child Network USA, a newly registered network, and continues to work as a speaker at leadership events and functions globally. Yet perhaps her most inspirational role is as a mentor to hundreds of girls across Zimbabwe who now follow in her footsteps. From girls to women, they continue to raise their voices declaring, “Never again, not any woman or girl again” (which is fittingly the title of Betty’s upcoming autobiography).

While this issue of violence against the girl child remains a complex challenge in many countries worldwide, one thing is clear — violence against girls is neither excusable, nor inevitable. With strength and determination, one person has changed the futures of tens of thousands of girls, positively affecting not only their lives, but also the lives of their families, communities, and children to come. We invite you to explore our website to learn more about the influential work of women like Betty, whose accomplishments serve as inspiration to women worldwide.

Embracing the Intuitive AND the Analytical

May 17th, 2012

A study has just come out that argues that analytical thinking weakens religious belief, while at the same time, intuitive thinking may strengthen religious feelings.

Though the article comes out in a new issue of Science, this idea has been hypothesized for the last few years. For example, last September neuroscientist Joshua Greene and colleagues at Harvard University

asked hundreds of volunteers recruited online to answer three questions with appealingly intuitive answers that turn out to be wrong. For example, “A bat and ball cost $1.10 in total. The bat costs $1.00 more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?”

Although $0.10 comes easily to mind (it’s the intuitive answer), it takes some analytical thought to come up with the correct answer of $0.05. People who chose more intuitive answers on these questions were more likely to report stronger religious beliefs Tattoo Gun For Sale, even when the researchers controlled for IQ, education, political leanings and other factors.

In the same study, another group of volunteers wrote a paragraph about a time in their lives when either following their intuition or careful reasoning led to a good outcome. Those who wrote about intuition reported stronger religious beliefs on a questionnaire taken immediately afterward.

So why might critical thinking lessen religious belief? Why might intuitive thinking strengthen it? And what are the implications for the religious community?

First, from the critical thinking side, it seems obvious as to why analytic thought might lessen religious belief. After all, when you start to think critically, you stop accepting things purely “on faith.” So when people look at their texts or beliefs through a critical lens, they naturally begin to question the religious tenets that they held throughout their lives.

And yet religion is not just intellectual — it is designed to be predominantly emotional and spiritual. It is supposed to make us feel things — it is supposed to generate a sense of awe and wonder, build connections to others, elevate our compassion for those in need, and make us work to right the wrongs in this world.

So what does this mean for religion today? It means that for our world today, religion has to strive to be both intellectually sophisticated and emotionally resonant.

If religion is simplistic, or dogmatic, or anti-scientific, then as soon as new information or new ideas arise, it will shut itself off from the outside world. And as soon as it closes the door on new ideas, religion will stop being relevant.

And if religion is stale, or boring, or uninspiring, then no one will want to be part of it.

But if religion speaks to our deepest longings, if it inspires us to become better people Tattoo Gun, and if it can embrace not only faith but doubt, as well, then it will have the potential to become a great force for good in this world.

As Mayor Cory Booker said in a post on The Christian Left:
“Before you speak to me about your religion, first show it to me in how you treat other people; before you tell me how much you love your God Best Tattoo Machine, show me in how much you love all His children; before you preach to me of your passion for your faith, teach me about it through your compassion for your neighbors. In the end, I’m not as interested in what you have to tell or sell as in how you choose to live and give.”
Yes, critical thinking may lessen religious belief, and yes, intuitive thinking may strengthen it. But we have to remember that “religious belief” is not a value in and of itself.

Instead, the real question is how we use our religious beliefs to improve ourselves and our world.

Free Hacker-Themed Embroidery Machine Designs

May 17th, 2012

Niamh O’Connor at Urban Threads has an interesting angle on the recent phenomenon of skill badges. Rather than selling the badges Tattoo Ink For Sale, they’re selling (licensing?) the designs, enabling anyone with access to an embroidery machine to embroider their own badge or garment. She’s especially interested in targeting hackerspaces and is prepared to offer free designs to these groups. (Apparently the above designs are not necessarily included in their offer…)

Any space that gets an embroidery machine can get in contact with us at support@urbanthreads.com and we’ll offer some free designs of their choice to get their collection started! In general, we’re just looking at supporting the community in any way we can Tattoo Gun Kits, I think hackerspaces are a totally rad idea and we think we can offer designs that would appeal to the hacker demographic.

These spaces you guys are creating seem like a perfect place to kickstart the more specialized areas of crafting… sergers Tattoo Machine Professional, quilting machines, knitting machines, all kinds of stuff that normal folk sometimes don’t have the money to get their hands on, not just areas for knitting and the like, but really a place they can grab tools they can’t usually access. We ourselves have worked with two local designers who said they would love to use machine embroidery on their designs if only they could get access to a machine. We love what we do, but we understand that the cost of machines can sometimes be prohibitive for some people to try it out.

So, if your group has one of these machines and would like to play around with Urban Threads’ designs, be sure to drop Niamh a line.

Are You Doing Your No. 1 Job as an Entrepreneur

May 16th, 2012

Your skills as an entrepreneur can make the difference between a booming enterprise and closing your doors far too soon. Your No. 1 job as a small business owner is to sell. Your job is to motivate Marc Jacobs Dresses sale, inspire and convince customers, potential investors, and often family that your business idea is worthwhile. It typically requires passion for your project, a coherent message, and most importantly, a confident delivery of that message. This can be a tall order if you don’t have a sales mindset. Do you have discomfort speaking to strangers? Are you unable to convey enthusiasm about your business? If you have a tough time getting into the sales mode, your solution might be to hire or partner with someone and let them do the selling, but then you can get into a mine-field of issues around control of your message.

How do you build your sales confidence? First, you need to understand where you are today. If your venture is a side-hustle in addition to a main job, and your business passion is on “low” and you just want to keep working your flea market stand, or selling cosmetic products to friends, you probably are where you want to be from a sales energy standpoint. The stakes grow considerably Buy Bandage dresses, however, if your venture is a full-time effort. The pressure to generate enough revenue to support yourself and your family will make you become laser focused on selling. Not to mention, if you have goals to grow your enterprise, this means a stepped up selling effort, too.

The Flawless Pitch — First you want to create a “flawless pitch,” telling your company’s story in one minute or less — what you do or sell, who you specialize doing it for and what makes your business special. For example “My name is Bob and I own Bob’s garage. We specialize in the repair and maintenance of luxury car transmissions at far less than dealer prices and all work is guaranteed.” You have a story to tell both potential customers and prospective investors which will get them to ask “Tell me more.”

Give it a Test Run — Practice is not just for baseball and dance class. You need to practice your pitch in the mirror, with your family and friends, and with anybody else who will listen. Ask for hard questions and honest feedback. This will keep you from looking foolish later. If you open a dry cleaning store, and a customer asks you about the chemicals you use for cleaning, you should be informative and give that customer good reason to do business with you. In the restaurant business it is about tasty, quality food, well presented in a clean environment. As proprietor, you and your staff will be touting signature dishes, great service, and satisfying portions giving customers great reasons to return by delivering on what you promised. People need and want to be convinced to buy stuff. You must be able to tell them why they should buy from you.

People should be able to feel your passion — Your enthusiasm and positive spirit are absolutely essential to selling. Whether you are selling to customers, selling your business concept to potential investors or trying to borrow money from your local bank, don’t minimize the excitement of your passion for your business and your absolute belief in its success. If you are short on enthusiasm for your enterprise, you need to take a hard look at whether being in that business is for you. Your ability to sell is key. Introspection today should set your expectations for tomorrow. Once you get the hang of power selling, closing a sale will be thrilling and more fun than work.

Do you have more ideas to get over the fear of selling?

Frankfurt PreviewBMW X6 spied before debut

May 15th, 2012

Now that it’s been confirmed the BMW X6 will make it’s world debut in Frankfurt next week, those tasked with keeping the prototypes under cover have been given the green light to show a little more skin… err, metal. These newest shots don’t leave much to the imagination, giving us a very clear view of both the front and rear of BMW’s SAV.

The front clip has a decidedly sportier appearance than its big brother the X5 Tattoo Supplies, with larger air dams, kidney grilles and fog lamp recesses. The sloping roofline out back is as extreme as we expected Tattoo Supplies, and the small spoiler integrates smoothly into the hatch.

Frankfurt is less than a week away, so, as always, watch this space.

May 14th, 2012

Race to the Bottom

May 14th, 2012

O.J. Simpson

The central facts in Snyder v. Louisiana are not in dispute. Allen Snyder stabbed his estranged wife and her boyfriend in August 1995. The boyfriend died. An all-white jury found him guilty and imposed the death penalty. The question for the high court today is whether the Louisiana prosecutor in the case improperly used peremptory challenges to exclude all five black prospective jurors because of their race. The question that may have nothing whatever to do with this case—although it sure makes things wacky—is whether that same prosecutor then went on to invoke the O.J. Simpson trial to inflame his all-white jury, telling them, ominously Replica Christian Audigier Clothes, that “the perpetrator in that case … got away with it.”

In 1986, in Batson v. Kentucky, the Supreme Court decided peremptory challenges of jurors based on race were unconstitutional. A prosecutor or defense lawyer can certainly strike jurors simply because they just feel wrong (that’s how peremptory challenges differ from challenges “for cause”). But they can’t use their peremptories to racially discriminate. Of course prosecutors don’t announce they are striking Mrs. Smith because she’s black, and so Batson and its progeny strove to craft a test for smoking out such unspoken bias. If this sounds like a process fit for Karnak the Magnificent, it is. As a result, today’s argument features a lot of justices filling in a lot of imaginary conversations that never happened in the first place.

If you’re in this class for credit, note that the formal constitutional test for race-based strikes looks like this: First the defendant has to connect the dots between unspoken justifications to show racism. Then the burden shifts to the other side Discount DKNY Dresses, to unconnect the dots with a race-neutral explanation. “It’s not racism,” they’ll say, reconnecting the dots to form, say, a muffin. “It’s just a muffin!” Then the burden shifts back to the party who objected, to take another crack at showing intentional discrimination.

In court today, Snyder is represented by Stephen B. Bright Buy Chloe Dresses, who quickly explains that the only way the state can disavow the clear racial bias in striking every last black juror is by getting up so close to the dots that you can’t see the pattern. It’s like putting your nose right up to a Seurat painting. Each innocent explanation, he says, sounds plausible, but put all the prosecution conduct and strikes together, and “nothing explains it like race.”

Chief Justice John Roberts asks why the defense raised Batson challenges about only two of the five jurors. Bright replies that you can’t object to jurors being stricken for race until you see a pattern. In this case, he says, the defense didn’t even see a pattern until several black jurors were struck.

Justice Antonin Scalia says the court shouldn’t be in this Karnak business at all. “The district judge was in a much better position to decide this,” he observes. “I can’t tell from a cold record.” Bright replies that even the cold record shows that while 21 prospective jurors were asked if they objected to the death penalty, only the black one who did so was dismissed without follow-up questions. Roberts reiterates that these inquiries are “atmospheric” and best left to the judge who’s watching rather than appeals court judges, who are just speculating. In this case, neither the trial judge nor the Louisiana Supreme Court saw racism.

Roberts and Samuel Alito take turns explaining that the dots could be muffins until Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg points out that looking at the transcript, the trial judge appears “quite passive.” She asks whether he was in fact present for the entire jury selection.

Bright thinks passive might be overstatement. At one point in the process, he says Cheap DKNY Clothing, the defense counsel struck one juror and the judge granted it. The prosecutor then turned and asked the judge: “Are you crazy?” The judge replied, “No Missoni Dresses sale,” and moved on. Scalia, trying to rehabilitate the inert judge, suggests that this “sounds like a good answer to me.”

Justice John Paul Stevens finally brings in the references to O.J. Simpson, asking whether they are “even relevant to what’s before us.” Bright replies that the prosecutor continued to refer to the Simpson case, even after he promised, midtrial Replica Hale Bob Dresses, to stop.

“What does that have to do with anything?” asks Scalia. “He broke his promise. Sue him or something.” Bright says the prosecutor was “obsessed” with the Simpson case and was using it to inflame the jury. Scalia tries to find a more benign parallel between Simpson and Snyder: “The man killed his wife, in the home, then feigns mental illness in his great escape escapade.” Just like O.J. Of course, O.J.’s jury actually found Simpson hadn’t killed his wife, so the parallel is a little tenuous, no?

What Are We Doing in Afghanistan

May 13th, 2012

A U.S. Marine in Afghanistan

Not long ago, Afghanistan was known as “the good war.” Now some are calling it “Obama’s Vietnam.” Both tags exaggerate. Across hundreds of years of sorrowful history, no war in Afghanistan has ever been good. And Vietnam was different in so many ways that parallels with the war against the Taliban tend to muddy more than clarify. (Ho Chi Minh was the legitimate leader of a unified polity, the United States violated international law by blocking countrywide elections, U.S. troop levels grew to 500,000 at their peak, etc.)

But the specter of Vietnam does, or should Replica Anonimo Watches, haunt us in one compelling sense: the reasonable fear that we are about to step into a bigger, thicker pile of mud—a more all-enveloping quagmire, if you will—than the first step of escalation might suggest.

Unlike those who got us into Vietnam, today’s top officials—including President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates—at least see the specter. Both have emphasized that their goals in Afghanistan are limited; daydreams of turning the place into a democratic republic—”some central Asian Valhalla,” as Gates snorted in recent hearings—are over. Gates further stated at those hearings, before the Senate armed services committee, that he would endorse his commanders’ request for three additional brigades—but that he’d be “deeply skeptical” of subsequent requests for more. The fighting needs to be done mainly by Afghan troops, he said, adding that if the Afghan people begin to see it as an American war, “we will go the way of other imperial occupiers.”

This is reassuring. However Patek Philippe Replica Watches, even “limited” goals can justify a vast military expansion.

For instance, Obama and Gates have said that their “strategic objective” is to keep Afghanistan from becoming a safe haven for terrorists who threaten the United States or destabilize the region.

However, military commanders need to translate that strategic objective into an “operational goal,” and there are many, very different ways to do that—each requiring different levels of troops performing very different missions.

Some argue that the best way is to step up attacks on Taliban and al-Qaida forces directly, as—or perhaps before—they cross the border from Pakistan. Others say it’s better to stop chasing terrorists all over the countryside and instead to protect the Afghan population, provide basic services, and build their trust. But since resources are limited, which segments of the population do you protect—those in the cities, where most of the people live, or in the villages, where the Taliban have made their deepest incursions?

President Obama has talked of sending three extra brigades to Afghanistan. That means about 12 Where buy best Replica Alain Silberstein Watches,000 combat troops. Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, talks of deploying 30,000 extra troops—doubling the 30,000 we have there now.

These numbers sound far apart, but they’re not. Obama’s three brigades would also require “enablers”—military jargon for the personnel who enable the combat brigades to fight. They would include an aviation brigade (already in place), a division headquarters, a support brigade, military police, medics, military engineers (to build the expanded barracks and bases), and so on. Add all this into the mix Replica Swiss Movement Watches, and you get 30,000 extra troops. Obama and Mullen are talking about the same troop boost.

How did they come up with this number? This is where the cause for worry begins. It didn’t come from any assessment of how many troops are needed for a particular mission. No decisions about a specific mission—an operational goal—have yet been made.

The request for three brigades stems from one fact and one fact only: That’s how many brigades will be available this year, as more troops pull out of Iraq.

It’s a number based on what we have, not on what we need. It has no substantive rationale.

There soon will be a rationale, and it may well be the product of systematic thinking. Three “strategic reviews” of Afghanistan are currently in the works, due to be finished this month—one by the National Security Council, one by the Pentagon’s Joint Staff, one by Gen. David Petraeus’ staff and advisers at U.S. Central Command. (Petraeus’ review encompasses Afghanistan, Iraq Replica Casio Watches, and the surrounding region.)

Each review is being conducted separately, but they are all dealing with the same questions: Given the president’s strategic objective, what are the operational goals, and how much do we need—how many forces Fake Perrelet Watches for sale, of what kind, doing what, for how long, at what cost—to succeed?

Judging from press accounts and from my own conversations with officials and advisers involved in these reviews, a consensus seems to be developing that—in the medium to long term—we should put most of our efforts into a counterinsurgency campaign, along the lines of Gen. Petraeus’ field manual on the subject. This conforms to the school of thought that the best way to defeat insurgents is not to chase them here and there, but to protect the Afghan population and help build loyalty to the government.

However, there are widely differing views—both between and within the review teams—over what to do in the short term (as well as over how long the short term might last). The problem, widely acknowledged, is that a certain level of security has to be attained before a full-blown counterinsurgency campaign can work—and that many Afghan cities, villages, and roads haven’t reached that level.
